Notes from the list
West Bengal notifies two lists, and both close State Government offices: List I (public holidays under Section 25 of the NI Act, 1881, which also bind banks) and List II (State Government holidays only). Each entry's note says which list it is in. Several dates have two holidays and are combined into one entry here (23 Jan; 1 May). Holidays falling on Sundays are not listed by the notification: Bir Chilarai's birthday and Guru Ravidas's birthday (1 Feb), Shivaratri (15 Feb), Durga Puja Maha Saptami (18 Oct), Lakshmi Puja (25 Oct), Kali Puja (8 Nov), Chhat Puja and Birsa Munda's birthday (15 Nov). Yearly closing of bank accounts on 1 Apr is for banks only; government offices and treasuries stay open, so it is left out here. Birthday of Poet Bhanu Bhakt, 13 Jul (Monday), is a holiday only in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. Sectional holidays (List III): Easter Saturday 4 Apr (Christians only); Hul Diwas 30 Jun (Adibasi Santhal employees only). District-only: full holiday for Maa Manasa Puja on 18 Aug 2026 in Bankura and Purulia (No. 3059-F(P2) dated 17/08/2026). No substitute holiday is given when a holiday falls on a weekly off. Dates of Muslim festivals may change with moon sighting by separate order or by TV, radio and newspaper announcement.
